Soft start vs. hard start: opposites, sold as synonyms

A soft starter and a hard-start kit are opposites — but they're sold as the same thing. One makes your compressor's startup gentler and lower-current; the other makes it harder and faster. Ask for one, get billed for the other, and you've paid to solve the wrong problem.

What startup actually looks like

When a single-phase AC compressor starts, the motor briefly pulls its locked-rotor amps (LRA) — printed right on your condenser's data plate, typically 5–6× the running current. A 4-ton unit that cruises at 15–17 A might spike to 80–100 A for a fraction of a second. Utility power shrugs at this; generators, inverters, and weak service connections do not.

A true soft starter ramps the compressor up instead of slamming it — cutting the startup surge to roughly a third or less of locked-rotor amps. That gap is the whole reason a generator that stalls on a hard start can run the same AC on a soft start.

Hard-start kit: a stronger shove

A hard-start kit ($20–$60) is a start capacitor plus relay. It adds phase-shifted torque so the compressor snaps to speed faster — a legitimate repair part for an aging compressor that struggles to start, or for long line sets. What it does not do is cut the startup current. The surge still happens; it's just over sooner.

Soft starter: a controlled ramp

A true soft starter ($250–$400 — EasyStart Flex, SureStart) is solid-state: it ramps voltage over the start, so the motor accelerates smoothly instead of slamming to speed. Startup current drops to roughly a third of LRA or less. That 80–100 A spike becomes a 25–35 A event — the difference between a 7,500-watt generator stalling and starting your AC with room to spare.

One more impostor to know: cheap "RV AC soft start" boxes that merely delay the fan so the compressor starts alone. That trims a couple of amps. A real soft starter ramps the compressor itself.

Which one do you need?

Generator / solar / inverter can't start the ACSoft starter. This is the use case it was invented for.
