The certifications that aren't adjectives
- UL 2998 — independent validation that a device emits effectively zero ozone. If a product page can't show it (or CARB), treat "no ozone" as a slogan.
- CARB certification — California's air-cleaner ozone rule (≤ 50 ppb for in-duct devices). Required to sell in CA; a meaningful bar everywhere. Notably, the REME HALO is CARB certified — the controversy about it is not mainly about ozone.
- ETL / UL listing — electrical safety, table stakes. A shocking amount of imported gear skips it.
The REME HALO controversy, both sides
The case for: a huge installed base with genuinely happy owners; the most consistent praise is odor elimination — cigarette and cooking smells gone in days — plus Florida installers who report coil-mold complaints vanish from their service calls. The HALO-LED carries UL 2998 zero-ozone validation and CARB certification, and skeptical techs have been converted by units in their own homes.
The case against: HVAC professionals point at dwell time — air crossing an in-duct device at hundreds of feet per minute gets fractions of a second of treatment, so single-pass "kill rate" marketing can't mean what living rooms hear. The EPA has warned that PCO/plasma devices can generate byproducts like formaldehyde. In 2022, the National Advertising Division reviewed RGF's claims and recommended discontinuing the "kills 99%"-style and "sick building syndrome" claims — while finding the general whole-home purification positioning supported. And the wider ionizer category took a credibility hit from litigation over COVID-era marketing (against a different manufacturer, Global Plasma Solutions). Trade-side pricing complaints — $200-class hardware quoted at $1,200+ installed — round out the resentment.
